I think some recognition is due the German people for successfully tranforming themselves from a highly millitaristic nation, into one with an army smaller than most third world countries. I was stationed in Germany as part of the U.S. military and lived with a German family. Their decision to demilitarized was largely driven by the determination of German women that never again would they send their sons to die in war. American mothers said the same thing after Vietnam, but then they forgot because without a draft, their sons were unlikely to have to fight in America's wars
